Choosing the Right Fire

The right fire depends on the size of your space and the size of your section.

Size – as a rule of thumb, allow 1 kW of heat output for every 10 m². A typical 150 m² three-bedroom home suits a fire of around 15 kW.

Your section – on properties under 2 hectares, only clean-air approved fires can be installed (no more than 1.5 g of particles per kg of dry wood burnt, and at least 65% efficiency). Properties of 2 hectares or more have more options.

We’ll look at all of this during your onsite consultation and recommend a fire that heats your home properly.

Free Hot Water in Winter

A wetback uses heat from your fire to help heat your hot water, which can help take the edge off winter power bills. Not every fire can take a wetback – some ultra-low-emission models can’t be fitted with one – so we’ll let you know which options will work for your home.

Woodfire Questions, Answered

Do you handle the building consent?

Yes. We take care of the whole package – from the onsite consultation, through to the building consent, installation and final sign-off.

How long does it take from consultation to installation?

Generally, most woodfires take 4–6 weeks from the first consultation to installation.

What size wood burner do I need?

As a rule of thumb, allow about 1 kW of heat output for every 10 m² of space – so a typical 150 m² three-bedroom home suits a fire of around 15 kW. We’ll look at your home during the onsite consultation and recommend the right size.

Can I install any wood burner on my property?

Not always. On properties under 2 hectares, only clean-air approved fires can be installed – no more than 1.5 g of particles per kg of dry wood burnt, and at least 65% efficiency. Properties of 2 hectares or more have more options. We’ll make sure the fire you choose is right for your section.

Which fires do you recommend, and which are the most efficient?

We recommend a fire suited to your home’s size, layout, insulation and preferred look. Efficiency varies between models – our in-house heating consultant can walk you through the options that best suit your needs.

Freestanding, insert or built-in – which suits my home?

The best option depends on your home’s layout, available space, whether you have an existing fireplace, and the look you want to achieve. We’ll assess your home and help you choose the most suitable option.

Can you replace my old open fire or remove my old wood burner?

Yes. We can assess this onsite and give our recommendations on how to get the most out of your existing setup.

Do you certify existing open fires or second-hand woodfires?

Unfortunately, we don’t certify either of these.

Do you fit wetbacks?

Yes. A wetback uses heat from your fire to help heat your hot water through winter. Not every fire can take one, so we’ll let you know which models will work for your home.

How much hot water will a wetback give me, and can one go on my existing fire?

The amount of hot water a wetback provides depends on its output, how often you use the fire, and your hot water system. A wetback may be added to your existing fire if the model supports it and your hot water system is compatible. We can assess your setup and advise.

How often does my fire and flue need servicing, and do you do it?

We recommend servicing your woodfire and cleaning the flue once a year, ideally before you start using it for the season. More frequent flue cleaning may be needed depending on use, wood quality and how the fire is operated. Always follow your fire manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Contact our team for a fixed-price woodfire service.

Is a wood burner cheaper to run than a heat pump?

It depends on your firewood cost, electricity rates and how you heat your home. A heat pump can be cheaper if you buy firewood, while a wood burner may cost less to run if you have access to free or low-cost dry wood. Factor in annual servicing and flue cleaning when comparing costs.

What warranty comes with the fire and the install?

Your woodfire comes with a manufacturer’s warranty, with coverage varying by brand, model and component. We provide a 12-month workmanship warranty on our installation. These warranties are in addition to your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Are you Metro Fires agents?

Yes. We’re certified agents for Metro Fires, and our team is also trained by Central Heating NZ and Rinnai.

Do you cover my area?

Yes. With teams based in New Plymouth and Hawera, we cover the whole Taranaki region, including Stratford and surrounding towns.
