No Hot Water? Here’s What Could Be Wrong

There are four common reasons a cylinder stops supplying hot water:

1. A large hot water leak – a hidden leak can drain the cylinder faster than it can reheat.
2. A failed tempering valve – if the pipe off the top of the cylinder is hot but your taps run cold, the valve may need replacing.
3. A heating element or thermostat issue – if that pipe is cold, the water isn’t being heated properly.
4. Power supply problems – check the cylinder’s switch and that the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.

If you can’t find the cause, give us a call and we’ll sort it.

Hot Water Questions, Answered

How much does it cost to replace a hot water cylinder?

Hot water cylinder systems generally start from around $4,000 + GST. A straightforward replacement and a mains pressure upgrade can have quite different costs, and cylinder size, access, valves, pipework and electrical work all affect the price. Send us photos of the cylinder, its label and the surrounding pipework so we can assess the job and provide a budget estimate for your property.

How long does a hot water cylinder last?

Around 15 years is a useful planning guide, but some cylinders last much longer and others fail earlier. Cylinder material, water chemistry, installation and maintenance all affect lifespan. Age alone doesn’t mean it needs replacing – if you notice leaks, rusty water or recurring faults, we can assess its condition and explain whether repair or replacement makes better sense.

Why have I got no hot water?

Common causes include an electrical supply problem, a failed element or thermostat, a valve fault, or the household using more hot water than the cylinder can recover. Check whether all the hot taps are affected and whether there’s been a power cut. Don’t remove electrical covers or keep resetting a tripping breaker. Call us with what you’ve noticed and we can arrange the right diagnosis.

My cylinder is leaking – what should I do?

Call us promptly, especially if water is reaching floors, ceilings or electrical equipment. If you can safely reach a clearly identified cylinder power switch in a dry area, switch it off. Turn off the cylinder’s water supply, or the property’s water main, if you can do so safely, and keep away from wet electrical equipment. A leak may be coming from a valve or connection rather than the tank itself, so getting it assessed is important.

How long does a replacement take – will we be without hot water overnight?

A straightforward replacement can often be completed in one working day, while bigger upgrades, difficult access or relocating the cylinder can take longer. Once installed, the cylinder needs time to heat, so hot water isn’t available straight away when the plumbing work finishes – but in most situations you’ll have hot water back on the same day. We’ll explain the likely outage before we start and discuss arrangements if the work will run overnight.

What size cylinder do I need?

We size cylinders around your household’s actual hot water demand. The number of people, shower flow rates, baths, heating capacity and available space all matter, and two households with the same number of people can need different sizes. Tell us about your daily routine and whether you regularly run out, and we can recommend a suitable replacement or upgrade.

Should I upgrade to mains pressure, and what’s involved?

When a low pressure hot water system needs replacing, we generally recommend upgrading to mains pressure – it can significantly improve hot water flow and shower performance. We first check your incoming water supply, pipework and whether your taps and mixers can handle mains pressure. The work can include a new cylinder, valves, tempering arrangements and plumbing changes, and we assess the whole system first so the upgrade delivers the improvement you’re expecting.

What does a tempering valve do?

It regulates the temperature of the hot water delivered to your taps, so it doesn’t exceed a safe temperature. Tempering valves are generally designed to fail safe, so a faulty one usually means cold water at the taps rather than scalding water. A plumber can check and replace it.

Do you install heat pump hot water systems?

Yes. We install heat pump hot water cylinders and can talk you through whether one suits your home. We also install electric cylinders and gas hot water systems, and do mains pressure upgrades.

Are you available after hours?

We offer an after-hours emergency service in our South and Central Taranaki service area. Our New Plymouth team operates during business hours and doesn’t provide an after-hours emergency service. Call us with your location and the problem so we can confirm availability and explain the applicable charges before arranging attendance. Hawera: (06) 278 4449. New Plymouth: (06) 242 1133.

How does payment work?

A 50% deposit is required for all work over $500. For non-account holders, payment is due within 7 days of job completion or on completion, by cash, credit card, debit card or bank transfer.

Do you cover my area?

Yes. With teams based in New Plymouth and Hawera, we cover the whole Taranaki region, including Stratford and surrounding towns.
